Jesus fulfills the promise to bless the nations in Abraham. He is the true Seed of the Patriarch . The biblical view of the redemption of humanity begins with the Covenant of Abraham. It included the promise that “ all the nations of the Earth would be blessed in him ,” and that he would have innumerable descendants . The covenant promises were also for his “ seed ,” but who is the Patriarch’s “ seed ” destined to inherit the promises?

Jesus means ‘Yahweh saves.’ In the man from Nazareth, the Salvation promised by the God of Israel has arrived in all its glory . The angel informed Joseph that the child carried by betrothed, Mary, was “ begotten of the Holy Spirit .” He instructed Joseph to name the child ‘ Jesus ’ - “ Call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins .” This name pointed to the saving act of God for humanity that He was about to reveal to the world. The world would behold the “ Salvation of Yahweh ” in Jesus of Nazareth.

Is the Gospel of the Kingdom of God a message of hope for only some nations, or is it Good News for all countries and peoples ? The Gospel has often been perverted into Good News for some nations but bad news for others — or, at least, a less appealing message for the latter. This occurs whenever representatives of the Church of the same Jesus who gave his life for the world associate and even identify his name and message with certain nations, races, cultures, and political ideologies.

The jurisdiction of the Mosaic regulations over the covenant community reached its limit with the arrival of Jesus, the Seed of Abraham . In responding to claims that Gentiles must be circumcised, Paul appealed to the common experience of the Spirit received by the Galatians.  Did they receive the Gift through a “ hearing of faith ” or “ from the works of the Law ?”  Having begun in the Spirit, why did they seek the “ completion ” of their faith based on “ flesh ” by submitting to circumcision?
